Important Video Game Tester Information
In this article I’m going to let you in on all the other video game testing information that couldn’t be
squeezed into the other relating articles and stuff that you may need reminding of that were in the others.
The fact is that many people will get caught up in the dream of becoming a game tester, try hard at it, and fail
because of a few mistakes. Well were going to try and minimize the risk of that happening to you, right here.
- When you’re taking the first big step of actually trying to become a games tester, it is crucially important that you stay focused
and remain on task. For the first couple of weeks you will feel more like a busy office worker than a game tester because of all the e-mails,
websites, letters, guides and proposals you’re going to have to wade through. But just remember that persistence will prevail with a
task like this.
- So you have your first job and can’t wait to get on down to a long gaming session and get paid for it too. But just hold on for one
second and remember what you’re doing. You can still have fun while completing mission after mission and during those nail biting cut-scenes,
just try to keep a somewhat critical eye and keep asking yourself, “could that have been better?” or “should that have even been there?”.
After all, when it comes to filling out that report, you will want at least some constructive criticism.
- While you’re testing, keep a note pad handy. Jot down anything you think is good, bad, ok, badly put-together or superbly master-minded.
This will also help when your filling in the final report as you will have something to refer back to.
- Every gamer likes to have their friends around for a multi-player death match in HALO or to coast around in a group in WOW. And although
these are features you may have to test, try to keep most of the testing with you flying solo as it’s quite difficult to keep a critical eye
when you’re arguing with your buddies about who really won.
- During the time when you’re testing games, it’s easy to become detached from the gaming industry. This really is crucial to your success
as you’ve got to be up to date on up coming releases, new technology and equipment that you can use. The easiest way to do this is to
subscribe to a couple of gaming magazines and to check out game reviews and news online.
- Finally, because you have to go and find your work, and because no sooner has a project started its over, you must keep looking for work
constantly, especially when a project is coming to a close. Submit proposals to companies as often as you can. This should bring in a pretty
steady stream of work, and if you’re all booked on having fun, you can just decline offers with a nice, professional e-mail.
-
Well there you have it. Stick to these guide lines, and the others in the previous articles and you should be guaranteed success within a few
weeks and be able to stand on your own two feet within a couple of months.
Just one last thing, remember to have fun and not let the boring paper work bog you down because after all, 90% of a game testers work is
playing games and just having fun.
